: I want to paint my son's dresser. It already has one coat of paint on it (another color). Can I paint over it or do I have to strip it? Also, what type of paint should I purchase? In addition, we want to sponge paint stars and moons on the drawers. Any and all advice including step by step INSTRUCTIONS would be helpful.

Hi Karen;
I've done some furniture and it is holding up well. I washed the piece first if painted. Then lightly sanded it so my new coat of paint will adhere. Then tack clothed it to get all clean. I used acrylic paint. Do two light coats and be sure to let dry thoroughly. I have used stencil sheets I bought at store. I cut old sponges into tiny 2" by 1" rec. and wet it with water and sqweeze the dickens out of it, even rolled it on a cloth. Then on a foam plate I put a blop of acrylic paint and lightly dabbed the sponge in it. Then plopped it a number of times on a paper towel and THEN dabbed it on the stencil.
After painting and stencilong is done and thoroughly dried I put a light coat of satin polyurethane on it and let it dry. Three more light coats yet! And lightly sand between each coat and tack cloth it. The last coat you can use gloss if you want.
I put 5 light coats on my old wood kitchen tables set and it's very durable.
I hope this helps you.
