Basic Hermit Crab On-line Care Sheet by Landhermie

Humidity: 73-85% relative; monitor with humidity gauge

Temperature: 70 - 85 degrees, depending on species; monitor with temperature gauge or thermometer

Water: dechlorinated ( they have modified gills! Fresh and salt ( not the hermit crab brands or table salt)

Food: Fresh food or epicurean hermit ( www.epicureanhermit.com [ sorry about the link, but it's inevitable]) Commercial foods ( foods sold in stores) often have very bad ingredients that could kill and cause deformities.)

Tank size: No smaller than 10 gallons. Depends on how big hermit crabs are, and how many there are. Needs plexi-glas lid or plastic wrap cover.

Substrate: Play sand preferable. Coconut fiber is OK, too ( make sure it's 100% coco-fiver.) Brands include Eco-Earth, Forest Bedding, and more. Must be 3 inches deep or more, depending on how big the biggest crab is. Gravel is bad. This is because the hermit crabs cannot dig down to molt. This will cause surface molt. Surface molts cause stress as well as come with stress.

Molting: Will shed skin.

Typical Molt- Hermit crab will dig under the substrate if deep enough.

Surface Molt- As you can tell by its name, you can guess that it occurs on the surface of the substrate. This can be due to substrate not being deep enough and stress.

RESEARCH!

This care sheet is more like a summary of what you'll need. You will have to research on hermit crabs. Many places are wrong, though, so be careful. These places often get wrong advice, selling crabs, and / or faulty hermit crab supplies.

Hermit crabs are NOT low-maintenance, and can cost a plethora of money!
