Once you click on "JAVA Chat Now" you have to wait for the applet to load. It will open a new window that asks you to enter a nickname. After you've done this, click on the "connect" button. This will bring you directly to the chat room.
If this is not working, check to make sure your browser is java-enabled, or alternatively, you can download an IRC client (program) such as mIRC or pirch (for PCs) or IRCle (for Macs). There are links to these programs at The FUN Place.
