Old-Fashioned Gingerbread

1/2 cup butter, softened
1/2 cup sugar
1 egg
1 cup molasses
2-1/2 cup all purpose flour
1-1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1 teaspoon ground cloves
1 teaspoon ground ginger
1 cup hot water

Cream butter, gradually adding sugar with an electric mixer at medium speed until light and fluffy. Add egg and molasses, mixing well.

Combine flour, soda, salt, cinnamon, cloves, and ginger. Add to butter mixture alternately with water, beginning and ending with flour mixture. Mix after each addition.

Pour batter into a lightly greased and floured 9-inch square pan. Bake at 350 degrees for 35 to 40 minutes. Serve with a dollop of whipped cream.

Makes 9 servings.
