Chinese Brown Sauce

I have searched and searched for a recipe for chinese brown sauce that is used in restaurants. When I inquired of one Chinese restaurant owner who makes great brown sauce, she said that their secret is fish sauce that is used in the recipe. However, I was unable to get a recipe from her. Can anyone help?
