Taunted for wearing glasses

My son has been wearing glasses for about 2 years now. My son would come home and cry about how his "friends" were calling him names for wearing glasses - glasses that he "needs" to wear because one of his eyes is a lot weaker than the other. He was always leaving them behind on purpose. He told me that he didn't need glasses but deep down inside he knew he did. He had been tormented throughout this past year in second grade. He had enough of the name calling when one day he had presented his glasses to me one 1/2 in each hand (after I asked why he wasn't wearing them). He cried and said it was an accident but I know exactly what it was. The kids in his class would start calling him names and then they get the band rolling and everybody starts out calling him names. He's going into third grade and I'm wondering how can I help build his morale so that he knows that he has to be his own person and not worry about what the other kids are saying. Yes, it is very easy for me to say it but he has to deal with these kids again come September. I'm hoping that things will be different since the kids would have aged at least a year. Does anyone have any pointers on what I need to do, what I should say to my son or what he should do??? He just wants everyone to like him.
