: I love sweatshirt jackets, and they are so easy to make. I have made them with and without the band on the bottom. Choose a size large enough to have plenty of lap room. Fold the sides together and mark the center front with a chalk line. Stay stitch 1/4" in on both sides of this mark to prevent the front from stretching when you work with it. Cut the shirt open on the chalk line. Cut a piece for facing from a matching broadcloth fabric that is as long as the front of the jacket plus enough to sew the top edges and bottom edges together to finish it nicely. The facing should go all the way from the top of the neck ribbing to the bottom of the bottom ribbing. I don't like the way the jackets hang with a heavy interfacing, so I have found that I get along best by just cutting the facing strip twice as wide as I want the facing to be. Fold the facing piece in half and sew the raw edges at the top and bottom together and turn right side out. Sew the length of the raw edge to the front of the jacket. Press it and turn under. I prefer to hand stitch the facing in place so the stitches aren't visible on the outside. Make button holes and sew on buttons. If you need to shorten sleeves, cut the ribbing off, shorten, and sew ribbing back on. Or you can also narrow the sleeve and face it to eliminate ribbing. I sometimes do this to the bottom as well, since on some of my dressier jackets, I don't want bottom ribbing. Please feel free to email me if you have questions. Good luck and enjoy.
