The simplest way to create a pinata is of course to put paper mache over a blown up balloon and then decorate it to your desire. What I was taught to achieve any type of form (geometric figures, dolls, animals, etc) is to actually form the basis out of thin cardboard (I use poster board) and then when you have the form paper mache over that.
