I have used an aluminum throwaway pan with water and some Borox mixed in. Float the paint ... I use the paint you use for model cars .... on top and swirl.
My favorite use for this is to blow eggs. and then dip the eggshell in the paint. Dry and cut out wings , tail, and beak. Glue on to the egg to make a bird. Thread a thread through the 2 holes in the egg and hang the eggs on pussy willow branches in a vase.
I'll do a dozen or so and this is my Easter centerpiece. Birds flying around the pussy willow tree!

you can use marbilized paper for the wings etc.
