I am 37, and had my second hole re-pierced. I had let it close up about 3 yrs ago. I also went to the Piercing Pagoda, but one here in NY. I wouldn't recommend you pierce an ear yourself.
I also do recommend frequent cleaning of the new piercing and the twisting of the earring so it doesn't adhere while healing.
