: It sounds like she would like something with a little more meaning than a new shirt.

: A piece of heirloom jewelry, it doesnt have to be fancy or expensive or a hundred years old, but a necklace or a ring that was given to you, or that has been in the family. Or start a new tradition and buy her a gift that she can give to her daughter on her 18th birthday.

: A memory book. Wrap up her baby book as a gift or get one of the newer 'mom remembers' type of books, fill it in with all your wonderful memeories of her and your hopes for her future and give her that. Or make a scrapbook of her childhood photos and momentos. Get letters from her grandparents and relative and friends to add to the collection.

: Donate to a charity that she likes.

: Arrange to volunteer together somewhere, the animal shelter, a soup kitchen, rock babies in the NICU at the hospital, whatever she would find fulfilling.

: Donate or plant a tree, or 18 trees. Or have her pick parks or charities to donate the trees to in her name.

: Is she going away to college? If so go on a 'moving out' shopping spree (toiletries, laundry supplies, basic household nessesities) and buy 2 of everything. Donate the 2nd piece to a womens shelter or homeless shelter to help someone make a new start.

: I hope she has a wonderful birthday!
: Joan
